Reflective Journal

Monday 26th September
We mainly researched climate change to further develop our understanding of it and to find facts we could share in our podcast.

Tuesday 27th September
We made a powerpoint presentation pitch for our podcast, which included an elevator pitch explaining our key messages, our goal for the podcast and how it will challenge us. It also included our target audience and how we will interest them. We explained our research, which included information by climate activists and Ted Talks. We explained how we would produce our podcast, and which Super 8 skills we’ll use in the process. We then made an online survey through Google Forms with questions about climate change and climate anxiety. This was then sent to other friends who were either Strode College students or students at other schools.

Wednesday 28th September
We looked at the replies for the online survey and then updated our research slide on our powerpoint pitch to include it. We took photos for BTS. Tamika began editing the introduction for our podcast by compiling clips of climate activists with music.

Thursday 29th September
We thought of questions for and filmed Vox Pops interviewing students, members of the public and store owners. We took photos for BTS.

Monday 3rd October
We began recording the introduction for our podcast. We also created a risk assessment to assess all the possible hazards in the TV and radio studios. We compiled these into a form and rated the amount of danger the risk is and how we can most appropriately prevent it.

Tuesday 4th October
The introduction to the podcast was refined and finished. We made a structure for the podcast to give ourselves a clearer view of how we were setting it out. We then went into the studio and took photos of hazards we could find, such as messy wires and drinks near plug sockets, and then we refined the risk assessment made the previous day to include the newer hazards we found.

Wednesday 5th October
I began analysing the Klepper podcast with Bill Nye. The topic of discussion was about climate change, and since Bill Nye is a scientist I thought he would have a very informed opinion on the topic. This also counted towards research. For the analysis, I looked at how it was produced; whether it included an introduction, music, sound effects etc. For the comparison, I compared it to other forms of media, such as a TV documentary, news report and a social media post. Finally, I wrote about the features of a good podcast, writing about good features included in podcasts, and what the Klepper podcast does and doesn’t include. We worked on the powerpoint pitch, making it all finished for recording the following day.

Thursday 6th October
We refined the introduction, and we also refined the structure of the podcast, making it more clear and easier to follow. We presented our podcast powerpoint pitch and recorded it. We began writing a more detailed script for the podcast to follow when we began recording. This would also help us edit the podcast once we’d finished recording, and we would be sure of the order and any music or effects that needed to be added.

Monday 10th October
I added to my analysis of the Klepper Podcast and the comparison to other forms of media and wrote about preproduction for a podcast. I also made my WordPress account more presentable and organised it by cleaning it up and placing each page underneath their associated title.

Tuesday 11th October
We researched information about climate change and recent events caused by it. The main things we found and wanted to talk about were the Florida floods, which began around a week before this. We thought this was important to talk about because it was a terrible event caused by climate change, and in comparison to the last floods in Florida, the water levels and amount of damage was worse. We also thought not many people would be aware of it, and we knew it was important to bring attention to the situation. We also researched fast fashion, and we thought this would be important to talk about because our podcast is aimed towards the younger generation, and fashion would grasp their interest. There are also many young people that don’t know how harmful it can be to buy from fast fashion brands, and we think it would be important to spread information about this topic. We also thought of interview questions for Romano, a member of the Strode Sustainability Club who kindly let us interview him about his knowledge and beliefs surrounding climate change. We also went into the TV and Radio studio to develop a further understanding of the equipment and how it works.

Wednesday 12th October
We interviewed Romano, a member of the Strode Sustainability Club. We asked him questions about climate change and climate anxiety, and what the Strode Eco Club do to help. He was able to give us a lot of information about the topic. We also went out and filmed some more Vox Pops with students to get a wider public opinion. Since our podcast is aimed more towards the younger generation, we thought it would be a good idea to gather more opinions from people in that age range.

Thursday 13th October
We recorded sections of our podcast, including an opening discussion about our opinions on climate change and climate anxiety, and recent events such as the Florida floods and the fast fashion trends. We also planned questions for the ending segment of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’, which was to be recorded the following day.

Monday 17th October
We recorded the survey replies and gave our opinions on them. One of the microphones was producing some loud feedback, which we solved by equalising the volumes of both microphones and changing the output of the audio. We recorded some sound effects to include in our ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ segment to make it sound more fun and interesting, and Tamika began editing the audio for that.

Tuesday 18th October
I made a new page on my WordPress account entitled ‘Radio Production’. I wrote about how to make an effective radio advert. I also began to refine my analysis of a podcast, since there was more information I need to include to make it a more in-depth analysis.

Wednesday 19th October
I finished editing the interview we did with Romano from the Strode Sustainability club. However, the interview is quite long, therefore I may edit it down some more if needed. Tamika edited the introduction to the podcast, but then we lost the file and couldn’t recover it. We think this is because we didn’t save it to the hard drive properly. Because of this, we had to edit the intro again. To make sure this doesn’t happen in the future, we will make sure to double check the saved file to make sure we haven’t lost anything. We all edited each segment of the podcast individually, with the idea that we would put them all together to make the final podcast.

Thursday 20th October
During editing, we realised that two clips didn’t have a clear transition between them. To make it sound more clean, we went back in the recording studio and recorded a section of talking to link the two topics. I made sure to double check the save file to make sure we didn’t lose it. We recovered some Vox Pop recordings that we misplaced and changed the file name so they would be easier to find. Tamika and Izzy finished the last bits of editing on the different segments. I refined my analysis of a podcast and the preproduction of a podcast.

Monday 31st October
I continued writing about my analysis of a podcast and the preproduction steps that go into making a podcast. I wrote in detail about different types of microphones that could be used to record with pros and cons. I also wrote about different recording locations with pros and cons.

Tuesday 1st November
I listened to two of other peoples podcasts in a group and we recorded an evaluation of them. I began writing my evaluation of our podcast on WordPress, and I made a word document to write down my ideas for each point.

Wednesday 2nd November
When listening to the podcast back, we found that some of the volume wasn’t equal, therefore we had to go back and edit it. I continued writing my evaluation. We handed in the podcast and received some feedback.

Thursday 3rd November – Deadline
I continued writing my evaluation, adding in the feedback we received.
